Bungie has issued a response to dismayed fans of Destiny, after an upcoming Collectors Edition for the game was revealed to have several bonuses for new players only.
The Taken King Collectors Edition, set to cost £60/$80, is due to be released along with the Taken King DLC in September, and the special edition will feature several exclusive items. Among these exclusive items are emotes and Exotic equipment, available only to those who purchase the Collectors Edition, for example, new players.
If veteran Destiny players wanted those exclusive items, they would be forced to purchase the Collectors Edition at the full price tag, and although this would contain the brand new DLC, the Taken King, a lot of the price tag would be wasted on content that veteran players would already have, for example the base Destiny game.
In response to this, Destiny‘s creative manager was interviewed, and unwittingly stated that “If I fired up the video right now and showed you the emotes, you would throw money at the screen” This understandably outraged many core Destiny players, who felt like they should be rewarded for sticking with the game for the better part of a year.
Bungie’s community manager, Deej, then took to Reddit in an attempt to quell some of the anger from fans, saying “I understand that you want me to go on record right now with something that will address the disappointment that’s being expressed here. I’m going to defer to the Bungie Weekly Update, in which we’ll talk more about the things we’re doing to celebrate the Year-One Guardians who helped build this community.
Deej rounded out by saying “I’ll also revisit our goals in offering different versions of the Taken King. Ever heard the old adage about trying to please everyone?” It certainly sounds like Bungie plans to appease fans and reverse their course with the exclusive content, perhaps offering new content to long time Destiny players.
